Improved version of BRT stressed by DOTr, OPAV

Metro News
Cebu City – The Department of Transportation (DOTr) said that it has expanded and improved the route of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system from originally only traversing Cebu City to now including some routes through Talisay City.

Undersecretary Mark de Leon stressed that that there is no shortening and no realignment of the BRT route.

This is to debunk the earlier allegations of Cebu City North District Representative Raul del Mar that the BRT route has been shortened.

The new BRT system has improved the reliability and coverage of the service, through its continuous exclusive carriageway and extension of its feeder services.

From the original 21.58 kilometers plan, it has expanded to 39.88 kilometers.

DOTr Undersecretary Mark de Leon said that the phase 1 of the BRT system will be partially operational before December 2021.

The trunk service of the phase 1 will cover the 13.83KM line from South Road Properties (SRP) to IT Park.

Feeder services from I.T Park to Talamban (5.68KM), Talisay to Mambaling (7.55KM), and Talisay to SRP (7.36KM) will also be part of the phase 1.

It is also remarkable that the Urban Realm Enhancement program or the Port Link which stretches 1.16KM will be seen before December of 2021.

Usec. de Leon added that DOTr wants to adopt a “Multi-basket of solutions” in the implementation of the Intermodal and Integrated Transport Project for Cebu.

He also said that budget remains at P16 Billion for BRT System alone which National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) national already approved.

For phase 1, DOTr assured that two-lanes per direction will be given to other motorists.

From Cebu South Bus Terminal to Capitol area, median bus stops will be constructed where right of way acquisitions are being undertaken.

Usec. de Leon also clarified that the fare of the IITS project will be comparable and reasonable with the existing transport mode.

Secretary Michael Dino on his end said that the government is not giving any preference to the business sector in SRP but is only implementing what the original plan was and is improving it.

“Enough is enough. Si Congressman Raul del Mar with the BRT situation before, we never said anything. But now, we are in the final stages of the improved BRT system, and he is trying to sound knowledgeable without even knowing the real score. I’m sorry to say but what he was spouting was really nonsense,” said Sec. Dino.

He also added that both the national government and the local government units involved are all united, and this unity is beneficial to all the Cebuanos.

“At the same time there is an allegation that we are rerouting it to give preference to some businessmen, which is absurd. If they did that before please don’t even think that we are doing the same thing. Dili na mao atong tumong, atong tumong is to make BRT relevant, to ensure an efficient means of mass transport system, primarily considering our riding public,” added Sec. Dino.

DOTr Assistant Secretary Eymard Eje also said that Secretary Arthur Tugade wanted to give a more comfortable life to the Cebuanos starting with safe, secure, and comfortable travel options as envisioned by the IITS project. (DYARNewsCenter/JB/PR)
