-part to the National Nutrition Council Region VII’s campaign to continually conduct advocacy drives to promote the 2020 Nutrition Month’s theme despite the limitations of the pandemic, the Province of Siquijor has devised several ways to continue spreading key nutrition messages without compromising the public’s health and safety.
So how did Siquijor transition to the “new normal” when it comes to celebrating nutrition month?
Cebu City – For this year’s celebration, the municipality of Siquijor decided to make use of the commonly used social media platform, Facebook, to commemorate the annual campaign. Certain activities were prepared by the municipality and that includes the poem recital competition or the Nutri-Balak which is performed by the representatives from the nine zones across Siquijor.
There was a total of nine entries for the competition and the participants were health care workers of their respective barangays. The entries of the competition are made accessible to the public through Facebook. The announcement of winners for the Nutri-Balak will be during the culmination activity this coming 31 July 2020.
Aside from the Nutri-Balak, the municipality of Siquijor has also organized a video presentation that tackles the importance of backyard gardening and how it can help families to attain a sustainable way of living. The municipality keeps up its social media platform activities by sharing testimonies of mothers on their experience when it comes to the health and nutrition in the First 1000 days.
On the other hand, the province of Siquijor has prepared a supplementary feeding program for children good for 120 days specifically for areas with high prevalence of malnutrition. The province has identified three of their municipalities: Lazi, Maria, and Siquijor to be beneficiaries of said program.
The supplementary feeding program had its kick-off in barangay Catamboan, Lazi with the theme, “Batang busog, himsog!”. Other LGUs from the province like San Juan also prepared their own programs for the celebration wherein they prepared a set of cooking demonstrations that support complementary feeding and in Larena, they just recently organized a breastfeeding support group in barangay South Poblacion.
The mentioned activities prepared by the entire province of Siquijor is a living-proof that the COVID-19 pandemic is not a hindrance to celebrate Nutrition Month for there are other ways that we could still make it possible for all.
