Cebu City – The Regional Bantay Asin Task Force (RBATF) 7 culminates the 2021 Goiter Awareness Week (GAW) celebration through a salt monitoring activity in two large salt plants in Central Visayas and select points of sale in the region. The activity was held on 29 January 2021 participated by the members of the task force.
GAW is celebrated last week of January every year by virtue of Presidential Proclamation 1188 signed on 11 December 2006 to increase public awareness on the prevention and control of Goiter and other Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD).
The monitoring team consisted of 15 representatives coming from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) 7, Sanitary Inspectors of the cities of Cebu and Mandaue and RBATF 7 secretariat visited Bohol Lirio Trading Corporation and Arvin International Marketing Incorporated. The group also inspected select bakeries, carenderias, and households in Mandaue City.
As part of the monitoring activity, the task force collected salt samples to determine the iodine content of salts produced and available in the markets and to make sure that the salt producers are supplying the right quantity of iodine in their salt production. The collected samples were then submitted to DOST 7 who will measure the level of iodine found in salt samples. The results of the recently conducted salt monitoring activity will be used as one of the bases in formulating the next strategic plan in Central Visayas.
Republic Act No. 8172, also known as “An Act for Salt Iodization Nationwide (ASIN) Law,” promotes the continuous elimination of IDDs through cost-effective preventive measures, such as salt iodization and ensuring that salt manufacturers produce, manufacture, import, trade, and distribute quality iodized salts only.
According to the World Health Organization, IDDs, which can start before birth, can jeopardize the children’s mental health. IDDs are among the main causes of impaired cognitive development in children. Iodizing table salt is one of the best and least expensive methods of preventing IDDs.
